SARAH AMOS JULY 19th - AUGUST 30th Artist’s Reception July 19th 6:00 – 8:00 pm For immediate release Contact: Cynthia Reeves SARAH AMOS OPENS AT SPHERIS GALLERY Sarah Amos, printmaker, opens an exhibition at the Spheris Gallery on July 19th with an artists’ reception from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public, and Sarah will be available for questions. Spheris Gallery is located at 59 South Main Street in Hanover, NH, and is open Tuesday through Saturday, from 11:00 am – 5:30 pm. Born in Australia, Sarah Amos, a master printmaker, maintains her studio in northern Vermont. In a new series of large-scale murals, she employs a process of richly layered collagraph and carborundum printmaking techniques punctuated by detailed over-painting. What results are vibrant and dynamic images that echo both contemporary and ancient cultures. Australia’s physical landscape has become a central focus in Amos’ work. Marks, patterns, and colors overlap and layer, forming intricate large-scale imagery. Her colors recall the Australian desert, while dots and lines clearly echo indigenous mark making. Cultural geographers argue that landscape is experienced physically, through a complex conflation of senses including sight, sound, touch, social structure and memory. With their scale and the layered tactility of their imagery, these works epitomize an embodied experience of landscape. “Our notion of landscape is changing,” she writes. “We tend to have either an idealistic or disenfranchised view of our environs, yet, in reality, due to climatic conditions, our landscape and our relationship to it is under severe change.” Amos’ process, in both its stages of accumulative research and its physical application, is a personal response to the collective anxiety surrounding the tension between man and the landscape. After she immigrated to the United States in the early 1990s, Amos became the Master Printer and Director of Vermont Studio Center Press in northern Vermont for ten years. Last year, she was invited to the Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne, Australia to be the International Visiting Artist-Fellow for two months. Amos has been a visiting Professor in the Studio Art Department at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH and collaborates with the Great River Arts Institute as faculty for their printmaking sessions in Bellows Falls, Vermont. Amos is represented by galleries in the United States and Australia, and her works appear in numerous private and corporate collections. Most recently her works have been exhibited at the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park, Lincoln, MA; Gallery 101, Melbourne, Australia; Reeves Contemporary, New York, NY; and the Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne, Australia. Spheris Gallery’s custom designed, two-level art space is located on Main Street in Hanover, NH, just blocks from the Dartmouth Collage Campus. The gallery’s dynamic program features leading artists who engage - visually and conceptually - in the global dialog surrounding visual culture. Spheris Gallery is now celebrating its 12th year in the region.
